Liberia, Africa
Since 1983, Garfield Memorial has had a sister church in Liberia, The James A. Garfield Memorial United Methodist Church. Relationships were severed during the two times of Liberian Civil War, and the church facility was utterly destroyed and many church members lost their lives. The first war lasted from 1989-1997 and claimed over 200,000 lives. The second war erupted from 1999-2003.
Some historians say that no other 21st Century conflict made use of child soldiers more than the Liberian Civil War. In 2004, mission teams were assembled and relationship with our brothers and sisters their were restored. Since then, Garfield Memorial Pepper Pike / South Euclid have sent mission teams, completely rebuilt the church facility, underwritten all church salaries and operating expenses, as well as help support the entire Camphor Mission Station. The Camphor Mission Station is a school for students grade K-9, a clinic, an agriculture program and a church.
